The new post holder of Development Co-ordinator will work closely with the Chief Executive to deliver the Strategic Plan and will have special responsibility to grow and develop our volunteer base. You will be highly motivated, with good project management skills, and have a real commitment to making a positive difference to the mental health and wellbeing of the communities we serve. Grant awarded to fund new Development Co-ordinator

We have been awarded a grant of £36,000 to help pay for a worker to recruit and develop more volunteers for our work within the community. The current economic downturn has seen an increase in issues such as depression and anxiety related to money worries and unemployment, and more skilled volunteers are needed to help provide a wide range of support options for the growing number of people using our services.

The two year grant awarded by the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales will help fund the salary of a Development Co-ordinator, to ensure the charity can continue to deliver initiatives to promote and improve the mental health and well-being of local people.

Chief Executive Jill Roberts says, “Local charities like us depend upon the enormous contribution of our volunteers, and on the generosity of others to ensure we can continue our vital work. We really welcome the generous support of the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales; this grant will make a huge difference to our on-going aim to deliver a wider range of services, as well helping us to involve our local community more fully in our work.

Mental Health Awareness Workshops

Sevenoaks Area Mind announce the next Mental Health Awareness workshop to be held at our Sevenoaks Centre on 29 March.

The half-day workshop will be run by our Sevenoaks Area Mental Health Awareness Group (SAMHAG) on Thursday 29 March, from 13:30 – 16:30 (registration from 13:00)

Health Trainer at Sevenoaks

Health Trainers are a new NHS workforce who can help you when you want to take more control over your health and want to make health improving lifestyle changes. They can offer up to six to eight free sessions of support, encouragement and practical assistance to help you make positive lifestyle changes, including:

emotional wellbeing
healthy eating
exercise
losing weight
sexual health concerns
stopping smoking
drug and alcohol issues

At Sevenoaks Area Mind we appreciate the important link between physical and mental health, and we are delighted to announce that you can now make an appointment to see a Health Trainer who comes to our Sevenoaks Centre on Fridays between 10am and 1pm. Christmas Opening Hours

We will be closed on Monday 26 December and Tuesday 27 December, and will be open on Wednesday 28 December, Thursday 29 December and Friday 30 December.

We will be closed on Monday 2 January 2011, and then open as usual from Tuesday 3 January 2011.

New Stress Workshops

Sevenoaks Area Mind are promoting a new Stress Workshop, facilitated by Phil Kessel and aimed at employers, managers and employees and anyone experiencing stress. We have already sold a program of these 3 hour workshops to Sevenoaks District Council. Read more on our Stress Workshop page.

Phil’s pedalling piles on the pounds

A local man’s island hopping cycle marathon around the Hebrides has raised over £1,500 for Sevenoaks Area Mind. Phil Payne covered over 1400 miles by cycle and ferry around the islands off the west coast of Scotland as part of a fundraising effort.

“It has been a long held ambition of mine to complete a cycle tour through the Hebrides”, said Phil. “Given the challenge, I thought that the ride should be completed for a good cause and the cause I settled on was Sevenoaks Area Mind”.

Phil’s endeavours are part of a year-long campaign of support by the congregation of St Margaret’s Church in Underriver, who chose us as their charity of the year.

Jill Roberts, Chief Executive, said “We have received tremendous support from St Margaret’s throughout the year, and this fantastic effort by Phil really will help us to continue to run essential projects to help local people during these very difficult times.”

If you feel inspired by Phil’s fundraising journey, why not turn your idea into fundraiser? This might be an epic journey like Phil’s or just holding an afternoon tea in aid of Sevenoaks Area Mind, a bring and buy sale, a dinner party or a barn dance. Your donations really do a make a difference so why not plan something for 2012!

Sevenoaks Christmas Lights – Thanks!

Many thanks to the staff, volunteers and especially the punters who came to our stall on Friday 25 November at the Sevenoaks Christmas Lights Switch-on Friday. The mulled wine and mince pies went down very well, and on the night we made a profit of just over £400 with which to support our work. Well done everybody!
